Every business misses calls. The question is how many, and what each one costs you. Here are the latest missed call statistics, with sources, and a simple way to work out what unanswered calls cost your business.

How many business calls go unanswered?

A 2024 study by 411 Locals tested calls to 85 small businesses across 58 industries (reported by Aira). Here is where the calls ended up:

  • 37.8% were answered by a person.
  • 37.8% went to voicemail.
  • 24.3% got no answer at all, not even a voicemail greeting.

That means about 62% of calls never reached a person. And these were calls placed during the study. Once your team has gone home, nobody picks up at all unless you have a plan for those calls.

What do callers do when no one answers?

Most people do not wait around. A 2025 CallRail survey of 1,000 US consumers found (reported by Beside):

  • 78% abandoned a business after an unanswered call.
  • 58% of unanswered callers left no voicemail.
  • 21% called another business right away.

Voicemail is not a safety net. Many callers hang up instead of leaving a message. Even when they do leave one, the business often does not call back in time. Quo analyzed 16.7 million missed calls and found that only 31% were returned within 48 hours, which means 69% got no callback in that window (reported by JustCall).

Invoca's 2026 benchmarks add another number: 44% of inbound callers never reach a person (reported by JustCall).

Why speed decides who gets the job

A person calling a business wants help now. If you do not answer, the next business on their list probably will.

InsideSales analyzed 5.7 million inbound leads from more than 400 companies in 2021. Leads answered within 5 minutes converted at 8 times the rate of leads answered between 5 minutes and 24 hours later. Yet only 0.1% of inbound leads were engaged within 5 minutes (reported by Beside).

The lesson is simple. The first business to answer usually gets the job.

How much does a missed call cost?

The cost depends on the job. These are typical job values reported for 2026:

  • HVAC repair: about $350 on average (Angi).
  • Emergency plumbing visit: $150 to $500 (Today's Homeowner).
  • Complex plumbing job: $500 to $2,000 (Today's Homeowner).
  • Full roof replacement: about $15,439 (This Old House).

To estimate what unanswered calls cost you, use this formula: missed calls per week × share that would have booked × average job value × 52 weeks.

For example, 10 missed calls a week × 40% × $350 = $1,400 a week, or about $72,800 a year. The 40% booking rate is an example, not a measured figure, so use your own numbers. Your phone provider's call report can show how many calls you missed last month.

Why after-hours calls are the easiest to miss

After-hours calls are the hardest to catch because nobody is there to take them. They also tend to come from people who need help right away.

  • The office is closed, or your team is on another job.
  • Evenings and weekends are when many urgent problems happen, like an AC that stops working on a hot night.
  • A caller with an urgent problem will not wait until Monday. They will call the next business.

How to stop losing calls

There are four common ways to handle calls you cannot take. Each has trade-offs.

  • Answer them yourself. It works for a few calls, but it is tiring and you cannot do it around the clock.
  • Voicemail and a fast callback. It is cheap, but most callers do not leave a message, and callbacks are often late.
  • A live answering service. A person takes the call, but you usually pay per minute and they often only take messages.
  • An AI phone agent. It answers every call, day and night, books the job and logs the details.

At Adaptify, we build and manage AI phone agents for you. Each agent is live in 6 days, with nothing for you to set up. If you want to see how it works, request your agent.

Quick checklist

  • Find out how many calls you missed last month.
  • Multiply that by your average job value and your booking rate.
  • Decide who answers the calls you cannot take, including nights and weekends.
  • Make sure every caller gets a response, not just a voicemail greeting.
  • Check the results every month.
