They're built for quick quotes and bids. Accuracy depends on how well the outline matches the roof edge and on the pitch you choose, so treat the result as an estimate and verify on site before ordering materials.
What is a roofing square?
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. A roof with 2,500 square feet of surface area is 25 squares.
How do you calculate roof squares from a footprint?
Multiply the footprint area (including the overhang) by the pitch multiplier to get the true roof area, divide by 100 to get squares, then add a waste factor. For example, a 2,000 sq ft footprint at 6/12 pitch is 2,000 x 1.118 = 2,236 sq ft, or about 22.4 squares before waste.
How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
Most asphalt shingles are packaged 3 bundles per square, but some heavier products use 4 or more. Check the manufacturer's wrapper and adjust the bundles-per-square setting in the tool.
Where does the roof outline data come from?
Satellite imagery comes from Esri. Building outlines come from USA Structures, a national dataset published by FEMA and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, with OpenStreetMap as a backup. If no outline is found, you draw the roof on the map yourself.
